Sandpoint Beach

Ron & Deb’s 43rd Anniversary

Today started out chilly and breezy (45 –65 degrees) First order of the day was to admire the lake we have developed a strong connection to. For some reason we are both enthralled with Lake Superior and its surrounding islands and cliffs. This is a place we could definitely spend an entire summer exploring.

Our first hike of the day was to Miner’s Castle a spot along the banks of picture rocks that we had seen from a distance last June. Up close everything looks different but just as beautiful. We then started a hike to the lake beach but didn’t get there. We hiked for about 45 minutes but had to turn back so we wouldn’t miss the shipwreck tour.

The shipwreck tour was great. With viewing windows in the floor of the boat we were able to clearly view the remains of three different shipwrecks. All the ships were made of wood and were amazingly intact. Ron was hoping to see sunken big lake freighters but that was not the case.

The time out on the lake was really nice and the weather was perfect. Although we brought our warm coats and hats we did not need to use them, much to our surprise.

We stopped at Muldoon’s a local Pastie (pas-tee) Shop and purchased a beef and chicken pastie for lunch. Pasties are a local culinary delight and not to be missed. They are like a meat pie turnover - very tasty and filling.

Around 4 pm we headed out to Miner’s Falls and took the 1.2 mile round trip hike. Once again we were met with stairs lots and lots of stairs. The walk down then up the stairs was worth viewing the falls.

Next off to Miner’s Beach and what a great place. The beach is pristine with views of the cliffs overlooking the lake. If one were looking for a place to meditate in solitude this is the perfect place. All stress would be relieved after spending an afternoon on Miner’s Beach.

By 6 PM I was ready to call it a day but not Ron the robot. We had to hike to one more waterfall and another beach. So, after some discussion we were off to the Munising Falls, another very pretty waterfall. According to the local publications, White sand beach has been listed as number 6 in the top 10 beaches in the country. It was nice but not as beautiful as Miner’s Beach (our opinion).
Our day ended with another great sunset and campfire on the beach. Unfortunately this is the turn around point in our trip. We will be making our way back home to the real world.
