9/01/08-Nairn Center, Canada

Captain’s Blog

We woke this morning to another beautiful sunny day. The weather has been unseasonable warm. The mornings are cool but by mid-afternoon it is hot.

We are still dealing with lack of refrigeration for out food and the ice thing is getting old. We always have a flood in the fridge not to mention the floor and the tons of towels we are using to sop up the mess. Don’t believe the commercials that Zip Lock bags don’t leak because they do. We hope to run into an RV dealership in Sault St. Marie that may be able to fix our problem. Until then more ice, more mess and more food lost.

The ride to Sault St. Marie is just under 500 miles from our current location. Unfortunately we had to fill the gas tank again. Gas is $1. 26.9 per liter or $4.69 per gallon. We had to gulp a few times on that fill-up.

Route 17 is a long, scenic, winding road through multiple small towns that is traversed around 35-40 miles per hour. Making good time is not an option so we just accepted that it would take us twice as long to get to Sault St. Marie the take off point for the circle tour around Lake Superior.

We stopped along the roadside in a plow truck turn around for a break and lunch when a lady came up to asking if she could use our cell phone. She had a heavy French accent and was difficult to understand. Ron and I went outside to see another motorhome right behind us. They had a tire blow out on further inspection they were very lucky they didn’t experience more damage because the back tires were bald and split. They became separated from their group that was setting up camp about 20 miles up the road.

Our phone didn’t work in the area and after I tried using her phone a message came up that they needed to pay for more minutes. She was going to take care of that issue and Ron and I would locate their friends and let them know where they had broken down. We did and the woman was able to make her calls after paying for more minutes.
As I said the route 17 passes many small towns and only one fairly large city of Sudbury. We planned on spending the night at the local Walmart , however, route 17 took a left hand turn by-passing that city. As we continued to drive we realized it was going to be difficult to find a place to stay- no campgrounds or rest areas around. After driving another 60 miles we came upon another truck stop in Nairn Center. Since there were no other options we spent the night there. We restocked our ice and tried to make the best of it.
