9/09/08 - Rossport, Rainbow Falls, Terrace and Dorion, Canada

Captain’s Blog

The plan for today was to stop en route to Thunder Bay and take in as many activities and sights as possible. We spent significant time planning for today only to find out that the brochures were not necessarily on target with things to do in each area. One might think that a trail or waterfall was close by but would actually be 50-100 miles away.

The scenery along the way was breathtaking and went on for miles. Each crest of the road brought more aahhhs from us.

The first stop of the day was Rainbow Falls Provincial Park to view Rainbow Falls. The waters of Whitessand Lake provide the backdrop for the falls. The falls ran down in tiers and were quite lovely. The hike included a great walking bridge with lots of stairs (again) to view the river gorge.

We then went to the Rossport Campground within the park. It was absolutely where I wanted to spend the rest of the day and night. The campsites are right on the edge of the lake with a magnificent view for as far as one can see. For some reason Ron didn’t choose to stay and off we went.

We stopped briefly for a hike to the Aguasabon Falls. It was another great hike ending with spectacular views. The falls were not running heavily and the viewing point was at an odd angle, but nice anyway. You probably can’t tell that we really love waterfalls.

The next stop was in Dorion, home of the longest suspension footbridge for an Eagle Canyon Adventure. Located on the sheer cliffs of Eagle Canyon the campground is surrounded with spectacular scenery and serene surroundings. We were the only campers in the 40- site lot for the first two hours then were joined by a family of six.

Two of Canada’s largest suspension footbridges are located here and of course we had to traverse both the 300 ft. and the 600 ft bridge but not before we climbed 300 stairs to get to the landing where the bridges are located. Need I mention that if we had taken the appropriate route we would have walked down those stairs instead of up. Gerat exercise though!!!

Walking across the bridges was easy and they didn’t sway too much. Jewel was with us and crossed with great trepidation. She walked by my side the entire way and was semi-crouching. She made it and was happy to get back on solid ground. Needless to say the view was wonderful and the canyon below beautiful.
Back at our campsite we had a campfire – something we haven’t done on the road for a very long time. We were by the river and it was incredibly quiet and a great endng to a fabulous day.
