9/02/08 –9/03/08-Sault St. Marie, Canada

Captain’s Blog

Today was not without excitement. Just after breakfast a small Class C Motorhome pulled up in front of us with smoke pouring out of the hood. An older gentleman got out and started pulling his guitars out of the back. The smoke was billowing and Ron went to offer help. As it turned out it was a broken hose – no fire. By the time we drove away someone was there fixing the motorhome.

We arrived in Sault St. Marie around 1:30 pm. We secured a campsite and located a dealer (Jeff’s RV Center). Jeff diagnosed our fridge as having a dead cooling unit. It would take 5-6 days to get a replacement so we decided to look for a 12 volt cooler to carry us over until we got home. Jeff would not accept any payment for his time because he was unable to fix our unit. We were amazed that he didn’t charge us for the diagnostics- certainly at home we would have been charged.

Our search for a 12 volt cooler took us to a variety of stores and again we ran into some very helpful people. A very helpful clerk called area stores for us asking if they had what we were looking for. In the end we purchased a 45liter plug in cooler. By the time we set up and cleaned up the mess (once again) it was 7 PM and we were really tired. We will be spending two nights here just to rest and get re-organized.

It rained last night and the temp dropped dramatically today. It is chilly today and intermittently sunny.

The good news is that the cooler we bought is working great so we will not be getting our fridge fixed until we get home.

Ron did some research and our fridge is on recall for the very problem we are experiencing. When we get home we will be able to get it fixed at no cost to us (we hope).
It was a lazy day today. We walked along the boardwalk at Saint Mary’s River and watched the freighter’s go by. Then it was back to the RV for more relaxation. Tomorrow we will begin our circle tour and anticipate some beautiful scenery.
